About

Hi, I'm Aly, a quiet artist, writer, mom, wife, enneagram seven, and all-day snacker. I'm native to the cornfields of Minnesota, but since college, I've called a handful of places home. Currently, my family and I reside in Seattle, Washington.

I began Raising Girl as a personal outlet upon the birth of my daughter, Florence, in 2015.

That part of my story began with an unplanned pregnancy. I was 27, single, and working at a grocery store. My mind was far from motherhood (maybe the farthest it's ever been) but I had a gut feeling. I wanted to be a mother. So, in the uncertainty that arises alongside a positive pee stick, I grabbed for what I knew to be true: love and faith, and I stepped aside and let nature do its thing.

I'm still discovering everything I said yes to when I become a mother. This role demands parts of me I've had to will into existence (with the help of numerous parenting books and plenty of wine). Through motherhood, I've learned to be softer (with myself and others). I've learned to talk about the world in stark truths, with simple words. And maybe most pertinent to this blog, motherhood has pushed me to confront my own wrestlings with what it means to be a woman who loves herself well.

So if all this could be called a direction, than that's where you can expect this blog to go. I invite you to follow along with me as I find make my way. Thanks for reading!
